What Is a Flank Spay?

Most spay procedures are currently performed by making an incision in the midline, abdomen. After she is stitched up, the weight of her abdominal organs puts added pressure and tension on the incision. There is a better way to spay.
A "flank spay" places the incision along the lateral (i.e., side) body wall. Stitching up after the procedure entails making individual sutures in all three muscle layers, so there is less pressure on the healing incision. The incision has a greater chance of staying clean in a non-monitored environment. Surgeons educated in performing flank spays report that the procedure is easier and faster to perform than the traditional spay procedure.
