Did You Know »

Each unsterilized male and female dog and their offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in their lifetime. This is why spay/neuter is so important. Romania Animal Rescue has spayed/neutered more than 9000 dogs in Romania free of charge for the people, thus preventing 301,500,000 potential puppies to be born.

We are dedicating this newsletter to Bertha Stoete, 80:

She was the beloved mother of Maria Wiegman. She loved animals all her life, and helped Romanian animals by donating for their spay/neuter so they would not be born into suffering.

Dear Romania Animal Supporters »

I am so happy to invite you to read our newsletter! The puppies (13) and dogs (26) that were living in the abandoned house in Ploiesti are all out of misery - the puppies are in Austria, and the adult dogs are at a private shelter in Hungary, awaiting adoption in Austria. This was an incredibly difficult project for RAR to take on. Many sleepless nights, tears of worry, and finally tears of joy!

We also were able to spay/neuter 193 dogs in Tecuci and Craiova, preventing hundreds of thousands of puppies from being born to suffer (each unspayed female dog and her offspring can produce up to 67,000 puppies in 6 years!). Our huge Spayathon in May will allow RAR to s/n at least 1000 animals......with your help we can do thousands more! Without spay/neuter, we in the animal welfare world are essentially "chasing our tails" -- we can never adopt all of the animals into homes, we can never assure that animals will not be abandoned or killed. BUT we can prevent them from being brought into a world of suffering. RAR provides free spay/neuter for shelters, for impoverished citizens, and for the stray dogs as our funding allows. With your help, we can do more miracles to help the animals and those who love them.

Thank you so much!,

Dear friends,

I am happy to inform you that RAR team proved once again its extraordinary capacity of achieving extraordinary things with such little resources. We travelled more than 600 miles to spay and neuter more than 220 animals and to rescue 33 dogs from Ploiesti. Despite the cold weather and poor roads we managed to prevent the suffering of thousands of pups that would have been born to suffer.

We organised a surgical room in a house where no one believed this was possible and operated all the animals there including local people's animals. Animals in Tecuci, Craiova and Ploiesti benefited from the free surgeries offered by RAR with your unvaluable help. It is a very pleasant feeling to hear from people,"When will you return?" We hope that with your generosity we will go back to the people and animals that need our help!!

Thank you for your support
that helps us help
a tremendous amount
of animals,
Dr. Aurelian Stefan, D.V.M

New Charity Challenge »

I challenge someone to start a charity to raise funds to hire attornies for animal rights in Romania. Enough of the nonsense of the corruption and using animals to make money. Nancy will help someone in the USA to set up a 501 (c) 3 if they need help. This will not be a political org, simply hiring GREAT attornies to fight for the animals! Email addresses can be obtained from petitions that have been signed by people all over the world. Then people can actually support the welfare of the living animals! Please  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you accept this challenge.

Tecuci Spay Day a Smashing Success

Romanian animals got a lot of attention during HSUS/HSI Spay Day International. On the weekend of February 12-13, simultaneous Spay Day events were held in Tecuci and Craiova, 500 km (310 miles) apart. Dr. Pepe traveled to Tecuci while Dr. Aurelian and Dr. Corbu were in Craiova.

Thanks to donations to Romania Animal Rescue, 93 animals were spayed or neutered in Tecuci and 50 in Craiova during the events. The veterinarians then returned to Craiova and spayed or neutered 50 more animals. The events received coverage on television and in newspapers, getting the word out about the importance of spay and neuter.

Thank you Mihaela Raducanu for organizing and participating in the Tecuci Spay Day! Thank you Dr. Pepe, Dr. Aurelian, and Dr. Corbu! You did a great job!

Craiova Spayathon Brings Hope

Against all odds, one man is trying to make a difference in his town. Last year Mr. V brought in many street dogs to be spayed or neutered, and RAR sponsored their surgeries. Recently he found a mother dog that had borne puppies under a porch, where they had frozen to death. Mr. V coaxed the mama dog out and brought her to be spayed, saving her future puppies (and those puppies' puppies) from a similar fate.

In May, Romania Animal Rescue is holding our biggest Spayathon ever, in Craiova. Three veterinarians, a vet tech, and other volunteers from the US, and Dr. Aurelian Stefan, Dr. Pepe Stefan and Dr. Corbu from Romania will roll up their sleeves and work together May 15-25.

Our goal is to spay/neuter 1000 animals, and we want to surpass our goal! It only costs RAR $22 to spay or neuter a dog, so with a relatively small investment, we can make a huge impact. Let's keep up the momentum of spay and neuter in Romania, and show citizens like Mr. V that we stand with them in their efforts. Please donate any amount that you can. Your dollar goes a long way.

Rescue Organizations Work Together To Save Lives »

It has been nothing short of a miracle. From the moment the animals' plights were discovered, it took only a matter of days for rescue organizations around the world to come together to save them. Twenty-six dogs and 13 puppies, some as young as 11 days old, were abandoned in a house in Ploiesti, Romania when the owner died. The nephew was going to throw the dogs out on the street. Not only would the dogs have been unused to fending for themselves, many had become ill due to the deteriorating conditions in the house, including lack of food.

Mihaela in Ploiesti contacted Romania Animal Rescue for help. RAR donated food and Dr. Aurelian traveled to Ploiesti to vaccinate, deparasite, microchip, and spay/neuter the animals. But where would the dogs go? Through phone calls, emails, and sleepless nights, help was found. Chrissy Phillips of Romania Animal Aid, Carol Byers of Animal Care Austria, Anu Raatikainen from Finland, Dr. Aurelian Stefan, Dita, Livia Brenner and Mr. Brenner worked with RAR for this mission of mercy. Mihaela made sure the dogs were fed and kept as healthy as possible.

All of the puppies and 20 of the dogs have been transported to a shelter in Hungary. The puppies and mother dog will travel on to Austria for foster care and adoption. Six dogs will be sent to the Glina shelter in Romania until they can travel to Finland.

The shelter in Hungary is being rented for $60 per day until the dogs can be adopted. Please, if you can, make a donation to RAR to help pay this rental fee. Romania Animal Aid has offered to pay as best they can, but all the rescue organizations are stretched thin. RAR wants to contribute, even though it is not in our budget. After all, what is a miracle worth? We are still shocked and humbled by this incredible ending to a story that started so bleak. Thank you to everyone who worked together to change these dogs' stories and give us renewed hope.

Orphaned Puppies Need Homes »

These three pups were orphaned when their mother was hit by a car in Ploiesti. Their mother was a lab mix stray, and was known to be a very kind dog. Their father was a German shepherd. The four-week-old pups are all females. They will be ready for adoption in a month.

If you would like to adopt a pup, please contact Nancy Janes at Romania Animal Rescue. There is a possibility of placing them in Oregon, but RAR would need to raise funds to get them there. Please donate if you can help the pups get to new homes.

Help Baloo »

This is Baloo. He was living on the streets in Botosani, Romania. A number of us were trying to find a foster home for him to live in, and then he disappeared! Luckily, our friend Lidia found him and has now placed him in foster care. Nancy will pick up Baloo in May, following the Romania Animal Rescue Spayathon, and bring him back to the USA with her. He will be placed into a loving home by our friend Peggy in Oregon.

Can you help with the cost for food and vet care for Baloo while he is in foster care in Botosani? He will need deparasiting, worming, vaccinations, and to be neutered. Please donate if you can so we can have more funds for our ongoing spay/neuter programs in Romania!

Thank you to all the RAR Causes donors!

Thank you to Dr. Aurelian Stefan. No one can imagine the demands made upon you by me, and you are always there to help the animals! Bless you my dear friend! Thank you for all your work for the Ploiesti dogs and puppies, and your "Never Say Never" attitude in getting them healthy, spayed/neutered and ready for transport! Thanks for going to Iasi and checking out the spay/neuter program and meeting with the city and the vets, and going to the shelter.
